Spent the last week, “learning” through the process of painting. Lots of sanding, waiting, and repainting. Its turning out okay, not perfect but as good as I can do right now.
Installed cart guards and side markers today, along with struggling on gluing in the hatch weather strip.(that glue is the absolute worst)
The wetsanding process left minor scratches that I can’t buff out for the life of me, and there are couple dings I missed in the body work phase. Still it looks great and a competent detailer could bring the shine out 100%, overall happy with it and the owner is too.
Suns in just the right area to show the minor dents
The fender has been sanded and buffed, the door had not at this point.
Repainted the front and rear end trim graphite to great effect
The carpet also got spray painted, its not an elegant solution but it’ll bring them back enough considering their condition.(all the seams are torn/ rotted from being soaked in water and 45 years old)
Painting the hood and trunk turned into a problem, first there wasn’t enough hardener for the remaining paint so that got picked up, then there wasn’t quite the paint to get enough layers down....and what layers they got dripped something fierce. Then labor day had everything closed for a long weekend, so finally picked up another quart today and will be able to get the hood and trunk finished tomorrow.
(Kinja is really borked on mobile right now)

Sad you spray painted the mats. RIT and a waterproof container/liner you will never use again is the answer there. Completely color fast once rinsed and dried.
How low of sanding grit did you go? Fresh paint was obviously a good decision and you got a good car to learn on. Looks much better than it did I’d bet.

Its not too sad, they need to be replaced, wish I'd known about that before hand though .
Went 1500, down to 2500, cut then polish.
It was in bad shape when it first showed up.(not pictured: other significant rust holes in the body)

That Z was a fast turnaround. That’s not bad for an amateur paint job in a garage. It obviously doesn’t need to be perfect because they paid you to do it and not a paint shop.

Yeah it was somewhat a convenience thing and its the right job sense this car won’t be a garage queen.
Fast has been like 3 months, but I did quit my job to finish it

Oh yeah it’s almost there, new mats are worth it and not that expensive, I got some thick ones. I think I might put sound mat in there under mine to lessen the road noise and firewall heat. I heard it really helps. I drive with the windows open so I can hear the carb/exhaust, I don’t want to hear the road noise anymore. I have a big roll in storage, I just might do that when the smoke goes away.

Something like dynamat is pretty easy to install too, it would be nice to get new carpet but not sure where to get it.

You quit or Rona complications? So you're trying to do this sorta full time or. . .
I didn’t know that actually but 3 months is still a fast turnaround for a rusty old Z. I’m sure the owner will be very satisfied. Got any .ore projects in the pipeline?

There are at least three major Z parts sites we use.

I quit, it was a minimum wage job there was union and benefits but the top of scale was very low,, Id been planning to quit for the past 6 months. Covid made customers worse and the essential workers hazard pay never came.
This work is full time but alot of the time isn’t necessarily on the clock do to fixing mistakes, cleaning, researching, or managing what to do. There are a few project leads, 1 or 2 will stick.

So 280Zs have full carpet?? We have some vinyl over the tunnel and then there is a floor mat for the hatch area and two floor mats in front, that’s it. It’s bare under them.

That’s a relay sucky situation you have had to deal with then. I’m sorry. COIVD seems to bring out the worst in people and the least you can do is not harass the people who didn’t get a cushy few months at home. I’ve never heard of a minimum wage job with a union before; seems like the two don’t go toget her well because of the turnover at low pay jobs.
I hope you like your new line of work better and hope it proves sustainable or at least for the short term depending on how long you want to do it.

Minimum wage in ca is fairly high ($ 13 i n this county headed towards $15) so the union didn’t keep up.

That’s more than the minimum wage I’ve been paid before but gotta be tough to keep off the bill collectors with that.

Looking really good and that white looks great too but you know I’m biased. I’ve got paint for my rear light panel but I will probably wait to do it for a while. 50!years of sun fade really took the color out.

Pulling those plastics off the car is a dangerous prospect. One of the light bezels snapped apart on this and it took a bit of fiberglass to bring it back
